This Sunday last it was a privilege to perform at the very first DMLab festival at RichMix, a wonderful day of workshops and performances focusing on accessible music technology.

As some of you know, I have been recovering after breaking my leg in three places while in the USA for SXSW Austin in March- and dislocating my ankle to boot! Once repatriated to the UK I had visions of spending lots of time in the studio or even writing a new book, but these soon evaporated once the reality of negotiating stairs with a fractured limb hit home. The level access in the hotel really was a gift!

So getting back on two feet only two weeks before the performance, I had a very short time to rehearse and finalise the programme. This was the VERY FIRST public performance on my new wireless Roborecorder, designed with Tom Mitchell from MiMU and using their amazing Glover software. So I had to redesign my whole Ableton set to work with the new setup.

The great news is the new recorder is AMAZING. I worked out some great ways to control everything I used to do with my three Softstep pedals and more. And this was just as well, because I broke my pedal foot! So if I’d been using my old setup the performance would have been completely impossible. The ultimate accessibility hack!

On the day there was a warm welcome from Sally Currie, Drake’s CEO, and the whole team. It was a pleasure to play at such a well organised event. The live captions of the performance and BSL interpretation were amazing, and the sound engineers were incredible too!

You can watch the live stream of the performance below and also check out the amazing other performers, the Clarion Trio and Tim Palm. Tim’s live set is incredible and includes him live mixing with his tongue.

Thanks so much Drake Music and I hope to be back out live very soon! In the meantime I’ll be attending SXSW London next week, so if you’re around Tuesday-Thursday, come and say hello!
